Artist Bio
New York’s Coheed and Cambria, formed in 1995, blends progressive rock, pop, metal, and post-hardcore, crafting intricate songs within Claudio Sanchez’s sprawling Amory Wars science-fiction saga, a narrative that spans albums, comics, and novels. Their 2002 debut, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, initiated this conceptual journey, leading to Top Ten albums like Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV, Vol. 1 and The Afterman: Descension. Sanchez’s ambitious vision, coupled with the band’s musical versatility, has cultivated a devoted international fanbase, allowing them to headline global tours and festivals. The band, featuring Sanchez, Travis Stever, Josh Eppard, and Zach Cooper, creates concept albums, turning them into rock & roll collector’s items with limited edition releases. Their 2015 non-conceptual album, The Color Before the Sun, reached number ten on the Top 200, showcasing their crossover appeal. The band’s early years, under the name Shabutie, saw them refine their sound, culminating in their 2002 debut on Equal Vision Records. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 followed in 2003, achieving moderate success with singles like “A Favor House Atlantic.” Their 2005 album, Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV, Vol. 1, marked a high point, hitting number seven on the Billboard charts. Internal changes followed, with Michael Todd and Josh Eppard departing in 2006, leading to Sanchez’s solo project, Prize Fighter Inferno, and the eventual return of Todd and the addition of Chris Pennie. The band’s 2007 release, Good Apollo I’m Burning Star IV, Vol. 2, and subsequent albums like Year of the Black Rainbow and the Afterman series, continued their narrative and musical evolution. The Color Before the Sun, a departure from their conceptual work, displayed their ability to create straightforward rock. They then re-entered the Amory Wars with 2018’s Vaxis I: The Unheavenly Creatures, a beginning to a new saga, which featured graphic novels and novellas. Following extensive touring, and a pandemic hiatus, Sanchez released a Prize Fighter Inferno album in 2021. Coheed and Cambria then released Vaxis II: A Window of the Waking Mind in 2022, and continued the saga in 2025 with Vaxis III: The Father of Make Believe, focusing on themes of family and loss.
